What is hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is a condition where there is decreased production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland. It is also known as “underactive thyroid”. It is an autoimmune disease. Thyroid hormones (T3, T4,TSH) are responsible for body metabolism. When thyroid glands doesn’t secrete sufficient amount of thyroid hormones then it causes slow metabolism of the body.

Hypothyroidism is mostly seen in women than men.

In children, it is known as cretinism.  There is delay in the growth of the child.

Normal levels of thyroid hormones:

TSH:  0.5-5.5 mlU/L.

Total T3:  80-220 mlU/L

Total T4:  4.5-12.5 mlU/L

Free T3:  2.3-4.2 mlU/L

Free T4:  0.7-2.0 mlU/L

There is an axis which maintains normal range of thyroid hormone levels known as Hypothalamic- Pituitary-Thyroid Axis.

Hypothalamus sends signal to the anterior pituitary to release TSH and TSH stimulates thyroid gland to release Thyroxine (T4) hormone for normal functioning of many tissues of the body.  T4 hormone thus gets converted to T3 hormone by certain enzymes in other organs of the body.  Malfunction in this axis leads to the disorder.  In hypothyroidism, there is an increased production of TSH and decreased production of thyroid hormones by thyroid gland due to many reasons/causes.

Causes of Hypothyroidism:

  1. Iodine deficiency is the commonest cause.
  2. Autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis).
  3. Dysfunction of the pituitary gland- In case of pituitary gland secreting decreased amount of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) Or dysfunction of the hypothalamus.
  4. Any trauma or injury to the hypothalamus and pituitary gland.
  5. Stress

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism:

  1. Weight gain.
  2. Sweating, weakness, and cramps in muscles.
  3. Hairfall due to dryness and thinning of hair.
  4. Irregular menstruation.
  5. Constipation.
  6. Anxiety, fear and depression.
  7. Poor ability to tolerate cold.
  8. Hoarseness of voice.

  10. Loss of appetite
  11. Thirstlessness
  12. Chest pain
  13. Swelling of limbs
  14. Loss of libido
  15. Forgetfulness
  16. Slow thought process
  17. Low pulse rate
  18. Bag like swelling under eyes
  19. Husky voice

Complications of Hypothyroidism

  1. Myxoedema coma- Untreated hypothyroidism leads to severe form known as myxoedema.  There will be low blood pressure, low sugar level, more sweating and weakness.
  2. Increased risk of cardiac disease.
  3. Enlargement of the thyroid gland- There would be difficulty in swallowing food and breathing troubles.
  4. Lathergy- Weakness.
  5. Depression.
  6. Infertility and abortions.

Conventional treatment

Diagnosis can be done by a simple blood test.

USG of the neck and thyroid can be done to diagnose tumour or any other abnormality.

Hormone replacement- Liothyronine and levothyroxine

Homeopathic treatment for Hypothroidism

Homeopathic medicines are very effective in treating hypothyroidism especially for early detected cases. It helps in reducing the dependency on hormonal pills.

Initially hormonal pills can be taken along with homeopathic medicines. There is no interaction between these two medicines. As the body starts responding to homeopathic line of treatment ; the need or the dependency on hormonal pills reduces. Later on patient can safely stop the hormonal pills.

Homeopathic medicines bring back the deviation of hormonal imbalance back to normalcy and thus helps in conception in case of infertility.

Treatment depends upon the severity and chronicity of the disorder.  Hypothyroidism has a long course of treatment and there is no adverse effect of homeopathic medicine.
