What is Alopecia Areata?
It is an
autoimmune disease. It causes loss of hair especially in coin shape
in a particular area of the body. It can be any area of the body but
especially it affects the scalp region.
Prevalence: It is mostly
seen in male. The ratio between male and female is 2:1.
How Alopecia Areata develops
As the
name suggests it is an autoimmune disease where ones own body cells
start destroying its own cells. The hair follicles is destroyed by the
malfunctioning of immune cells. Thus, causes the baldness in a
particular area in the body.
What are the types of Alopecia Areata:
1. Alopecia Barbae- It only involves
the beard area.
2. Alopecia Areata Monolocularis- It involves a
single bald area in the scalp.
3. Alopecia Multilocularis- It
involves multiple bald areas in the scalp.
4. Alopecia Totalis- In
this case person loses whole of his/her scalp hair.
5. Alopecia
Universalis- In this case a person loses all the hair of the body
like scalp hair, eyebrows, eye lashes, axillary hair, and pubic hair
then it called as Aloepcia Universalis.
What are the causes of Alopecia Areata
1. It is an autoimmune disease- Here
the body cells do not recognize its own cells and destroy them. Here
in Alopecia Areata the hair follicles are destroyed by ones own
cells.
2. Genetics: It can be genetic and can run in a family.
There can be a normal spot baldness (not Alopecia Areata- an autoimmune disease) and the reasons could be these:
1. Deficiency: Certain vitamins and
minerals deficiency can be one the causes for a normal spot baldness
(Vit B2, Vit E, iron, zinc etc.) and not Alopecia Areata.
2.
Habits: Certain habits could be one of the reasons for this condition
like smoking cigarette and drinking alcohol.
3. Certain chemicals:
Certain chemicals like shampoos, oils, hair color can be one of the
causes for spot baldness which is not alopecia Areata.
4. Fungal
infection- Mild to severe dandruff can be one of the reasons for spot
baldness. And can be easily diagnosed as there would be itching
associated with the dryness of scalp area and in severe condition
oozing of discharge due to scratching.
Due to heavy dandruff one
can lose the hair (spot).
